Slow spring, soggy summer

Slow spring, soggy summer

I am certainly not the first gardener to bemoan the start to the growing season. A cold, long spring, followed by a rather soggy, dull beginning to summer has meant that the veggies have had a very slow start.

In the orchard, pollination rates have been very low due to the lack of bees around.

This time last year, we had fat bulbs of garlic drying in the sheds, the broad beans had been and gone, and the garden was bursting with green abundance.

It’s now coming up for mid-June...

…and there’s a lot of catching up for the plants to do!

But it’s not all doom and gloom…

The oak leaf lettuces – hardy as they are – have been developing lush leaves despite the dull. The coriander has enjoyed the cooler weather which has delayed bolting, and the garlic has benefitted from the bursts of rain to swell their bulbs.

Every year is different, and the gardener has to work with the seasons as best as they can. There’s always something new to learn every year… that is the challenge, and the beauty, of working on the land!
